NYC Day 9 | Time Square New Years.

Day 9 New Year's Eve. Fairly uneventful day. One plan, hit up Time Square to watch the ball drop how hard can that be? Turns out? Extremely hard. Didn't take a lot of photos... was stuck at 7th ave and 52nd street for most part of the day. (FYI Time Square is located on 42nd & 7th.) Started the day with some Japanese food at Sunrise Mart, and while we were there chatting up with some locals about what we are doing on NYE... They were shocked we weren't already heading towards Time Square as early as 1pm. We were bewildered as to why we had to be at Time Square so early. As you can see pictures below, people arrived as early as 10am to lineup near the front stage on 44th. That night Justin Beaver, Lady Gaga, CeeLo Green were scheduled to appear on stage. We quickly rushed towards midtown, but we were too late already. At 4pm streets were beginning to closed as people filled up the streets. Entrances at 45th, 47th, 50th were already closed off... we didn't make it in until 53rd street. Fences were put up on both sides of 7th avenue, NYPD at the gate does a full body check, no alcohol or backpacks allowed, and once you leave there is no way back in. It was like herding a lot of cows into one concentrated area. At 5:30pm we stopped in front of a crowd people wondering if New Year's was going to be celebrated in the middle of the street with thousands of strangers. Yes. For six and a half hours we stood there like idiots waiting for the ball drop at 12. We did meet some very interesting people while waiting... one thing we did figure out was that no one in the crowd was a New Yorker. What does that tell you? Do I recommend celebrating New Year's at Time Square? Hell No. Unless you camp there the night before or wake up extra early and be there at 8am. Better off watching Dick Clark's New Years Rockin' Eve on ABC (now with Ryan Seacrest). Check out the rest of posts on New York City!
